NO 05 JANUAR 2007     FASHION AND HYSTERIA

Gianni Versace
The Man who Sparked Modelmania

It happened in 1989.  Out of all the more or less pretty girls presenting Versace’s 1990 summer collection, one particular face suddenly shown out amongst them – graced with a fetching beauty mark on the upper lip: Cindy Crawford. Of course, the face was already known, but no one was really aware of the beauty’s name.
“Which other fashion designers’ collections will we see you in on the catwalk?” she was asked backstage, where she stood around, a bit lost, on her own. Her answer: I flew in just for Versace.“

Pop Hysteria
We could take up the trail with David Bowie or The Sparks, but the most illustrious ‘Glam’ hysteric was a boy named Jobriath. He had everything Grace and Klaus had cultivated for their public personas.

Hussein Chalayan
With this year’s S/S collection, Hussein Chalayan managed to elicit an almost hysterical reaction from the usually rather aloof audience at the Paris shows. Storms of enthusiasm crashed against the catwalk with applause salvos lasting for minutes on end. There was a rare general consensus among viewers: no one had ever seen anything like this before.

A day in Dildo
Hysteria means spreading joy to the people far and wide, like the best form of entertainment. When my own personal hysteria is strong, I feel like an ambassador of joy. Yes: Joy to the World, that’s the mission.

Mikio Sakabe
Silence is Golden in Manga City
In the broadest sense, it’s all about the Manga aesthetic, the two-dimensionality of which Mikio Sakabe contrasts with the severity of his tailoring and an abundance of clinical white and somber gray.

Shoe Fetishism or Hysteria?
Shoe fetishists, say, know that an elegant shoe makes the whole silhouette. Shoe hysterics on the other hand, are compulsive collectors who will give everything to own a “special” model. These are the types who, proud yet slightly embarrassed, open their shoe cupboards to fashion editors or pose for photographs with their most prized acquisitions.
